When you are missing many of your teeth, one possible solution may be dentures. Dentures are artificial teeth that fit over your gums, allowing you to share your smile with the world while simultaneously providing support for your cheeks and lips.

When Are Dentures Placed?

An immediate denture is fabricated and placed immediately following tooth extraction. They protect the gum tissue as it heals and allows you to get used to the feel of having dentures in your mouth.

After the gum tissue has healed, a conventional denture will be customized to fit your mouth. An upper denture will include a flesh-colored acrylic that covers the roof of your mouth, while a lower denture will be shaped like a horseshoe to allow room for the tongue. The teeth are made of plastic, porcelain, or a combination of both. If desired, dentures can be attached to dental implants to allow for a more secure fit of the appliance.

How Long Do Dentures Last?

Over time, dentures will wear down and need to be replaced or realigned in order to retain the normal alignment of the jaw. Regular dental examinations are still important for the denture wearer to allow your dentist to check for disease or changes in your oral tissues.
